About that boat. I’ve done a design copying my first painting I did for my daughter. This one is made for print on demand, and my daughter is replaced as captain of the sail boat by one of my favourite animals- the Tasmanian devil. I think she looks great!
I wanted to loosely base the little devil off a real one we met and ‘adopted’ at Devils at Cradle in March this year. Uki is a young female who has been hand raised at the sanctuary.
You can help support the sanctuary with donations, becoming a sponsor and symbolic adoption. I thought we explained to our daughter that you don’t get take the devil home with you- but she either wasn’t listening or got confused anyway and was quite disappointed after we ‘adopted’ Uki and she didn’t come home with us. Oops.
A few facts for those unfamiliar with this beautiful creature!
The Tasmanian Devil is the largest carnivorous marsupial in the world.
They are scavengers with very powerful jaws- in fact they have the strongest bite for size of a mammal capable of crunching up the bones of their dinner.
They were officially listed as endangered in 2008. In 1996 the devastating Tasmanian devil facial tumour disease (DFTD) was first observed and has since been a heavy contributor to dwindling numbers as it is mostly fatal.
A newborn Joey is just the size of a grain of rice!
I’ve put it on my Etsy store as a 10×8 inch canvas, baby onesie, toddler tee and toddler long sleeved tee. I also popped 3 slight variations of the design on Redbubble as an art print, kids hoody and shirts, baby onesie, cotton tote bag, notebook, stickers, magnets and greeting cards!
